Com Ports always show ''in use"

V

Valerie

Operating system is Windows Nt Professional.

When modem was reinstalled, the system automatically
installed it on com port 4.

In Phone and modems, com 3 shows "In use".

How do I tell what is using com 3 or free that com port
to become available.

question 2:
In device manager, It does not show PORTS.
Where else, other than Phones and modems, do the ports
show?

The com port thing is a joke, you'll never get a answer in
here, cause nobody knows.

Com 1 and Com 2 are physical ports and have IRQ assignments
From there the ports are virtual There 256 of them. The
problem is once they are assigned they cannot be deleted,
but they can be un-installed there a trick to do. I had a
laptop that I was having issues with and had gone up to
port 16, from failed installs. The program would not
recognize anything above port 5. When you install
something it is automatically assigned the first open
port, but it goes to the higher # ( if 5,6,7 are open and
8,9 are (in use) it will assign port 10 you install
something, thus the problem.

How I corrected it was to take a USB modem and keep
installing it and go into the device manager and change it
to a port that showed (in Use) that I knew was not, then
when that port is accepted go back in and uninstall it.
Keep doing it over and over till you get them all out.

Been having the same problem. Couldn't find an answer anywhere. Yours is
the first. Where are all the MVPs on this forum.

they have no clue....been there, done that. They only know
the canned answers that they swap back and forth to each
other.

Funny I made this post a dozen times and you're the first
to ever comment on it, Ms Kelly. When the hard questions
come up all the MVP's run for cover. If someone posts a
question like the one above is seems like you would at
least try to research the issue from all your friends in
MS to find out.

I don't find it humorous at all. We all work hard at what we do, with the
free time that we have. That said, all with the same focus in mind:
Helping others.

I did this before my title, during my title and will and would continue
without the title. So get over that part and stop labeling folks here.
Besides, your contribution as a whole isn't all that great. Good day!

As per the issue at hand there is much to be read starting here:
