It sounds as though you want a three-column table (with or without borders),
not "newspaper" type columns that "snake" the text between the columns.

Forgot to mention, to insert a column break in the preset columns, you can
use Ctrl+Shft+Enter to jump to the next preset-column.

If you are going to use a three-column table, remember that the rows in Word
tables should not get too long, ie not too much continuous text in one cell.
The use of a new row can also be used to align text across the three columns.
