In trying to help my father clear spyware from his
Windows 98 PC, I ran Ad-Aware to check the registry and C
drive. I didn't create a backup. I deleted 200 files
that Ad-Aware designated as spyware.
Immediately afterward, Internet Explorer no longer
communicated with the DSL, and then would crash. I tried
his AOL, which also crashed. Tech support for DSL and
AOL were stumped, and suggested I uninstall Internet
Explorer and reinstall it. I uninstalled it, and then
upgraded the computer to AOL 9.0, which includes an
installation of IE. The upgrade went smoothly, but AOL
crashed immediately, and IE continued to crash. I even
downloaded an Opera browser, which also crashed. I
reinstalled Windows 98, and that made no difference.
I think this has something to do with the registry,
but I'm not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

You say you didn't create a backup but did you now AdAware has an automatic
backup?

I have only a freeware version of Ad-Aware that I've
only used a couple of times. Does it have an automatic
backup as well?

You didn't say what version it is. I have 6.0. When it finishes a run you
should see an option to remove them, if there any, plus an option to see
what you have previously removed. Once in there you can recover.
