Cogitum "Co-Citer" Text Grabber

n e a d

I don't remember seeing this mentioned lately and a search of Google groups
turns up a thread back in '02.

I came across this *very handy* text grabber program for I.E. 5.0+ (works
for me in Avant Browser).

From their site:

Cogitum Co-Citer is a tool for creating collections of texts from the
Internet. It automatically captures the selected text, its Internet
address, its title and date of adding to the database.
The program even allows you to assign your own comments and place it to a
specified folder. Once a text has been grabbed, you can:

*Create and manage new collections;
*Create and manage folders for organizing texts;
*Add comments about the grabbed text;
*Sort records according to various criteria;
*Follow the link associated with the grabbed text just by clicking on it;
*Import/export collections to work with them at other computers, to split a
*large collection into smaller ones, or to combine small collections into a
larger one;
*Publish the collection as a Web page;
*Send the collection by e-mail;
*Control how the grabbed texts and information are displayed;
*Search the collection;
*Print texts from a collection;
*Delete grabbed texts from the collection.

Pretty excited about this one.

I used to be excited about until it started to produce script errors every
time I grabbed text. They had a support e-mail which I used to report the
problem several times and got no response.

I switched to Steve Yandl's "Internet Explorer Text Archiver " instead. I
like it much better. In fact, with my meagre knowledge of scripting I was
able to customize it to my specifications.

Just for funI I tried Cociter again just now. Same script errors.

Can you use the text archiver with the ie browsers like avant or only
with ie? I can't load cociter at all- my spyware program disables it.
I've been using furl it to save text or pages I want to return to but I
would prefer to have it stores on my hard drive.

Hmmm. Haven't had any problems on my 98SE box. Use it at work too with a
Win2000 system with no glitches.
I'm going to take a look at your text explorer program, although I like the
fact that co-citer formats the text and you can export to HTML.
Thanks,
Sam

I think it will work only with Internet Explorer:

"Internet Explorer version 5 or later is required to run the actual
script. If the Windows Scripting Host has been disabled or is not
installed, the install and uninstall scripts will not run."

It makes an entry in the global msie context menu. Notice on your
alternative msie-based web browsers, as well as the many other program
that host the MS Browser control (hh.exe which renders .chm files being
one of the many), you have a consistent context menu, appearing in most
all of those programs.

It is possible for a program hosting the MS Browser Control to code in
auto-suppression of the normal context menu, but that's pretty unusual.

What I have seen, specifically in a couple of the msie-based web browsers,
it's a user option to have that browser's own context-menu display instead
of the normal global msie one. If Avant gives that choice, you'd need to
opt for the global menu, in order to have the ie text archiver menu entry
appear.

If you're using something that prevents all local scripting actions,
then that could interfere with the ie text archiver, which uses VBS.
I haven't heard any reports specifically on ie text archiver yet, but
do notice these hints on general disabling activity, such as the case
mentioned with co-citer.
