CODEC problems and SP2

Another glitch in the never ending saga to burn to DVD a family home video...

I just installed SP2 on my computer (it runs WinXP with 512 RAM and a 1.4
Mhz Centrino chip). Before doing so, I had trouble editing DV-AVI Type II
files in MM. Although the files could be imported and placed on the
storyboard, the video playback was choppy and video scenes didn't match the
audio.

After installing SP2, I get a CODEC error that prevents me from importing my
DV-AVI Type II files in MM. Any suggestions on 1) how to import the files
and 2) how to play the files in MM without the video glitches?

I am not sure about this but I believe Papajohn has said MM2.1 does not
support type II AVI files.

Actually MM2 can use either, but only produces Type I files.
PapaJohn may wish to comment himself but his site reference is
http://www.eicsoftware.com/PapaJohn/MM2/MM2.html

I use both acceptably.

My first step would be to turn off potentially conflicting codecs

<tools><options>[compatibility tab]

A quick test is to turn all the check boxes off and see if the problem
is solved. Frequently the codecs are added for purposes that you will
never use. (just remember in case of future problems).

If this solves the problem.....you can sigh and ignore or, If you wish
to isolate specific codec that is giving problems then you can gradually
turn filters back on until the problem recurs or use Gspot or some other
tool to identify what codecs are potentially used to do the rendering.

If it doesnt solve the problem you will need to use Gspot to identify
the codec and take more drastic action.

That's probably what I was thinking of. :)

Well I found this list on the Microsoft website but I don't agree:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can import many different file types, including:
a.. Video files with an .asf, .avi, or .wmv file extension.
b.. Movie files with an .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2, .mpa, or .mpe file
extension.
c.. Audio files with a .wav, .snd, .au, .aif, .aifc, .aiff, .wma, or .mp3
file extension.
d.. Windows Media-based files with an .asf, .wm, .wma, or .wmv file
extension.
e.. Still images with a .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .gif, or .dib file
extension.
f.. PowerPoint files and individual slides with a .ppt extension.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It has been my experience, as well as many others in this forum, that some
of these extensions either don't work at all, occasionally work, or
occasionally cause problems.
MPEG and specifically MPEG2 files are one example.
MP3 files also cause problems occasionally.
It has been reported by some that JPG still images have caused problems as
well.
