choppy audio and video when editing

I have WXP, and my version of MM says 5.1.

I captured video from my mini DV tapes in avi format.

While capturing everything was 'sinc'ing perfectly, I have the firewire
installed properly, 1GB of RAM, about 50 Gs of free space on the computer and
I've closed all other programs while running MM ... BUT still, when I go back
to edit, the audio doesn't sinc, and the video the "choppy" - what am I doing
wrong?

By the way, 5.1 is your windows version, look further down for your MM
version.
