The above may do nothing where your soundcard is concerned though if it
applies to your CD-ROM issue it might well be breaking the soundcard drivers
as well. If it doesn't resolve the sound issue, first, check with the
soundcard manufacturer's web site to be sure you have the latest drivers.
Then whether installing new drivers or reinstalling the current drivers,
uninstall the current drivers first, then install or reinstall.
