cntl alt del doesn't work

I have just installed Windows XP Pro on a newly assembled computer. I have
installed all the updates including SP3. Superficially everything seems to
work fine but there are several problems.

Cntl-alt del doesn't work. It doesn't bring up taskmgr. Nothing happens at
all. Taskmgr does work if I navigate to it and click on it.

There isn't an Administrator User. If I open User Accounts there are two
accounts. One is the one I set up during installation and the other is the
inactive Guest Account. There isn't an Advanced tab on the User Accounts
screen. Also, if I open Windows Explorer and drill down to C:\Documents and
Settings, there isn't an Administrator Folder.

I have looked for help online and found this link:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm The site has a list of
applications that should be executable . They aren't on my computer. When I
click them they display the contents of the file rather than executing.

Thanks,

David

*** Could be your keyboard. Get into the BIOS setup, then check if
*** Ctrl+Alt+Del works from there.

*** Click Start / Run / cmd{OK}
*** Type this command:
*** net user {Enter}
*** I bet that you can now see the "Administrator" account.
Also, if I open Windows Explorer and drill down to C:\Documents and
Settings, there isn't an Administrator Folder.

*** The "Administrator folder gets created when you log on
*** to this account for the very first time.

*** Can you give us some examples?
When I click them they display the contents of the file rather

Does the kb work anywhere?

Yes, the .reg files just show as text if you click a link; you're
supposed to right-click, click Save Shortcut (or whatever), then run
from your Desktop, or wherever. You might need to right-click the reg
file, click Merge to get it to work. This is explained at the top of
the page.

Thanks Pegasus and Elmo,

I got the application from Kellys Korner to work. The download added a .txt
extension. When I removed that it executed. Unfortunately, it didn't solve
the ctrl alt del problem.

Pegasus, I tried the net user command you suggested. I now think that the
account I set up when I installed XP is the Administrator. It just has the
name I entered rather than Administrator.

That leaves the ctrl alt del problem. Any more ideas I could try?

Thanks,

Thanks Pegasus and Elmo,

Elmo, I got the application from Kelly Korner to work. The download process
added a .txt extension. I removed that and it executed. Unfortunately it
didn't fix anything.

Pegasus, I ran the net user command you suggested. The administrator
account appears to be there but it is using the user name I entered when I
was installing XP. So the Administrator account is there but is called by
the name I entered rather than Administrator. So that problem appears to be
solved.

That just leaves the problem of ctrl alt del not working. Is there anything
else I can try?

Thanks,

David

Unfortunately you did not report the result of the test command (net use)
you ran. You also did not report what happens when you press Ctrl+Alt+Del
while in the BIOS setup mode. Without this information there is nothing I
can add.

Cntl alt del doesn't work in BIOS setup mode. Nothing happens at all when I
press that key combination.

The net user command produces this result:

User accounts for \\ComputerName

--------------------------------------------------------------
Administrator Guest HelpAssistant
David SUPPORT_388945a0
The command completed successfully.

C:\Documents and Settings\David>

Thanks again,

Did you ever try these Task Mgr fixes at Kelly's site?

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 51. Enable the Task Manager - Disable Task Manager
Line 113. Enable the Task Manager - Disable - Repair
Line 406. Task Manager Minimize on Use - Undo

Thanks,

Per your suggestion I tried Kellys #51, 113 and 406. Cntrl alt del still
doesn't work.

Is there anything else I can try?

Does Ctrl/Shift-Esc work?

The above list shows clearly that the user called "Administrator" exists,
regardless of what you might think. I would say that this is a non-issue.

About pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del: It certainly works on my BIOSs. However, not
all BIOSs are made alike. To prove conclusively that Ctrl+Alt+Del works on
your machine outside Windows, boot it with a DOS boot diskette or CD that
you can download from www.bootdisk.com.

Thank you both for your help. I have solved the ctrl alt del problem and it
turned out to be a hardware issue. I changed the USB keyboard for one that
uses the round connector. I still don't know why the USB keyboard didn't
work because it is OK on other computers, but at least this computer is now
functional.

Thanks again,

David
