CMOS checksum error

Hello,

Most CMOS batteries are flat rounded batteries. Some images can be found
here

The clock will reset as long as you don't replace the battery. That's what
keeps the computer's click ticking even when the power is cut off.

The battery only provides BIOS settings and clock times. The computer can
start-up, but with the BIOS settings and clock lost, which is why it always
resets to 2002.

if you look carefully at
your motherboard, you will
find a small watch battery.

it has a distinct function
with keeping the cmos charged.

that is why you can unplug
the electricity from the pc,
but it remembers your hardware
and to launch the disk with
the boot sequence.

Thanks for the help. There is no label on what I imagine is the battery and
I can't get it out anyway. Also, the clock now reverts to Jan 2002 whenever
I reboot no matter how many times I reset and synchronise. I shall probably
dump the machine!!
As a matter of interest, why does the machine start if the battery is
dead/damaged? Where would I find CMOS checksum in order to configure ir?

It would be silly to get rid of your machine just because a $2.50 battery
went dead..
they just snap in and out

A checksum failure is one type of hardware problem. Some program somewhere
is trying to read info from the CMOS, but the read failed and the i/o code
reported a checksum error. There is no "Checksum program".
