Closing Programs, but they still run with high CPU usage in background

X

XP

When I close almost any program, I find that, when
looking at task manager (processes), these programs never
closed, and they are running with almost the entire CPU
power in the background. When I force the program to end
in the processes tab, it closes fine.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this? It
just started happening out of the blue one day.

TIA!

Which programs in particular are doing this to you? What was happening
right before this started occurring?

I see something similar with WMP. My CPU will go to 100% if I try and stop
WMP downloading a file. Say I want to give up waiting because it's too slow
and try to close down the player. It closes and everything seems ok but if
I check the taskmanager processes
WMP is still there buring 97% and the machine is slow as a dog. If I kill
the process it's back to normal.
