closing one excel program closes all open excel programs

Help...I open a xls by way of shorcut on desktop...I open
another xls by way of shortcut on desktop. Now on
taskbar i have two open xls programs. However closing
one with a red X (in corner) closes BOTH applications.

The xls are not linked in any way....

It sounds like you have one instance of excel running (with two open workbooks,
though).

And you have Tools|options|view tab|Windows in taskbar (checked).

Since you only have one application running, closing that with the X in the
topmost right corner, will close all the windows/workbooks.

Use the X under the application's X. (Usually on the same "row" as the
File|Edit|view menu).)
