cloned XP partition to other disk won't boot

I cloned a (working) XP bootpartition to another disk, after a W98se
partition.

It will boot up with the XP screen, then flash a split second a BSOD
and then crash and reboot.

I used to have Acronis Boot software running.

I ran fixmbr. But that wouldn't help.

I did boot up with the old harddisk still on the cable, that might have
made things go wrong I read somewhere else in the newsgroup.

Question: is there a directory were I can find / read the BSOD info, so
that it will learn me what went wrong?

Did I try everything possible to restore (multiple) boot?

Thnaks in advance for any help!

Your post is a little light on details:
- Are you talking about one PC or two?
- Which partition was the original WinXP installation on?
The first (drive C:)? The second?
- Which partition is it now on? The first? The second?
- What partition type is it? FAT32? NTFS?
- Where is your Win98 partition?

And yes: After cloning, you must ensure to have just one
disk connected for the first boot, not both the original and
the clone.

Sorry ;-)
- Are you talking about one PC or two?

One - I added a 100GB disk from which I want to work on from now. Other
one is 11G.
- Which partition was the original WinXP installation on?

C, but there was another hidden XP partition in front of it.
The first (drive C:)? The second?

Was the old 1st and is now the old 2nd drive.
- Which partition is it now on? The first? The second?

2nd partio0n on the 100GB drive. After a W98se partition.
- What partition type is it? FAT32? NTFS?

It's in NTFS.
- Where is your Win98 partition?

On the 1st partition.

the clone.

I just read that booting with a W98 bootflop might help, because of a
different MBR it writes (longer than the XP MBR).

Thanks for your help untill now.

The Master Boot Record is the same for Win98 and WinXP.

If I understand your reply correctly then you had this configuration:
- Single disk
- First partition: Hidden.
- Second partition: WinXP

The new configuration looks like this:
- First partition: Win98 FAT32 (and presumably active)
- Second partition: WinXP NTFS (cloned)

Since you booted the machine with both disks connected,
the cloned partition may be compromised. I would start
all over again like so:
1. Save the Win98 partition on some other disk.
2. Hide the Win98 partition.
3. Clone the WinXP partition to the second partition on
the new disk. Make sure it is marked "active".
4. Test it and continue only if successful.
5. Make the Win98 partition visible and active.
6. Copy the hidden files \ntdetect.com and ntldr from the
i386 folder of your WinXP CD to C:\ (the Win98
partition).
7. Copy the hidden file \boot.ini from the WinXP partition
to C:\ (the Win98 partition).
8. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com).
9. Run these commands:
bootpart winnt boot:c:
bootpart win95 c:\bootsect.dos "Windows 98"
10. Try the two boot modes.

You can download bootpart.exe from
