Client will not load a web page

Since setting up my adhoc network on two Windows XP computers I have not been
able to get the client computer to load a web page. The host will load pages
just fine. I canalso transfer files between the two . The client will run
Instant messenger and go out to the internet and download updates to my virus
program, but it will not load a web page. I have run the setup wizard
numerous times, only to have exactly the same problem every time. At first, I
tried a wireless network, now I'm running a hub and cable. Either way I set
it up, I get the same thing. There doesn't seem to be an explanation...
Can somebody tell me why this condition exists and what I can do to fix it.
My IP addresses and DNS addresses match...

A $20 wireless router would make your life so much easier and with a
built-in firewall for added security... Something to consider.

As I said, I had the connection set up using wireless and it wouldn't work
either. Right now, I am using a twenty dollar router and two network cards.
There are no hardware conflicts and no obvious issues. It just won't let me
load a web page on the client computer.

I used the Winsock fix for Windows XP and when finished it said the winsock
was successfully reset. I rebooted and tried to load a couple of pages again,
but that didn' help.
These systems will ping each other and list their respective addresses just
like the book says they should, but the client absolutely will not load a web
page. I thought the problem could be with the host, but I just reloaded
windows on this computer yesterday. If that was the problem, I am assuming it
would have been fixed. The host is set up to share everything I can think of
- things like HTTP, PoP3, Imail, etc. I left nothing to the imagination...

By the way, I didn't mention it but the host computer shares a printer and
the client will print to it just as if it was connected directly...

host? This is a peer-to-peer setup, is it not?

I believe that is correct. I have two computers connected to a five port
ethernet hub.

Found it! I downloaded one of the programs listed there and the setting was
at 25,200. I changed it to 25,100. I also didn't mention that this is a dial
up connection. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Click on the link and click Edit and Find on IE and type MTU.

IE will take you right to it if you ask it.

It seems that utility was designed for Broadband. I set it to isdn 56k and
the recommendation was 1500. I tried those settings and it didn't change
anything.

Do you know what your DNS settings are supposed to be? Can you determine if
the PC with the trouble has the same DNS settings as the PCs that work?

The host computer acquires its DNS address automatically from the ISP. Yes, I
have those two addresses and they are different than the DNS numbers that the
client computer has. The client uses the default settings from the Internet
Connection Wizard
The client IP address is 192.168.0.204
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
DNS 192.168.0.1
I give up. I've been trying to fix this mess for two months but nothing I do
changes anything.

Can you manually change the DNS settings on the client to match the host
computer?
