I have a two pc home network both with zone alarm host with xp home and
client with xp proff both sp2 and while the host is fine the client pc cannot
access internet pages sometimes.
I have been able to access some but cannot access others then sometimes I
cannot access any at all.
Windows update is one that I have only been able to access once but could
not download updates.
Any ideas?

Since you refer to the computers as "host" and "client", I assume that
you've enabled Internet Connection Sharing on the host computer to
share its Internet connection with the client computer. Is that
right?

If so, there are some possible problems:

1. Some versions of ZoneAlarm are incompatible with Internet
Connection Sharing on the host computer. Try un-installing (not just
disabling) ZoneAlarm on the host computer. For firewall protection,
enable XP's built-in Windows Firewall.

2. If you have a DSL Internet connection, you might need to change the
Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) specification on the host computer.
For details, please see this Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

on a Windows XP ICS Host

Note that in the recommended "ping" command:

ping -f -l MTU_size default_gateway_IP_address

the "-l" option is a minus sign followed by the lower case letter L.
For example, using the recommended starting MTU size of 1454 and a
hypothetical default gateway address of 123.123.123.123:

ping -f -l 1454 123.123.123.123
