Cannot access client computer

T

Tony

Host computer: Windows XP Pro
Client computer: Windows XP Home

Home Network

I am having trouble accessing the Host computer from the
Client - both computers are accessing network and internet
through a Wireless Netgear Router - I have disabled both
my firewall (zonealarm), windows ICF, and Norton Anti-
virus in troubleshooting efforts.

Additionally, the Host can access the Client shared
folders without a problem

If anyone has some suggestions for further
troubleshooting, please advise

Tony,

OK, you have an XP Pro computer that can access an XP Home computer, but not
vice versa.

On the XP Pro computer, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel -
Folder Options - View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Home
and Pro together on the LAN, you need to have SFS enabled on XP Pro.

On XP Home, and on XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest with Start - Run -
"cmd" - type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window.

Please enable your firewall on the Host ASAP. Don't connect to the internet
without a firewall.

Configure the host firewall for file sharing, by opening ports TCP 139, 445 and
UDP 137, 138, 445, by enabling the File and Printer Sharing exception (WF SP2),
and / or by identifying the other computers as present in the Local (Trusted)
zone.

Thanks for the help Chuck - turns out problem was due to
load of incorrect version of Norton Anti-virus (loaded
Norton for win 2000 vs win xp configuration)

Tony,

GACK. Another example of the Norton Bloatware package causing problems.

Thanks for the update.

Cheers,
Chuck
