Clicking on a file to download opens it instead

I'm using WIndows XP and IE 6 with SP 2, something thing got changed that
when I click on a file link aon a site which was bringing up a dialog to
either open the file or save the file, is now defaulting to open. In order
for me to save it, I haveto right clikc the link and select save as, I'd
rather get back to the way it was.

The application needed to open the file is associated but when the file
opens it appears to be empty, hence the need to save it.

Any help is appreciated. This is happening with my wife's zip files and .cwr
files she is downloading.
