Click won't start application

Hi,

I just replaced my hard drive. Applications will run from a CD or from a
menu but if I click an application (.exe file) in Explorer the application
flashes for a split second and then closes. It doesn't execute fully. What
did I do and what do I do now to correct it?

Thanks,
David

Are these applications that are supposed to be run with/from a CD? It's
possible that they need to be installed on a local drive before they will
work.

Check your application event logs and after launching, open task manager to
see if the application is hung or if it still running as a process.
Microsoft or Eventid.net will give you insight into the application hang or
fault.

Thanks for your response.

Sharon, no they include any .exe application and they worked before.

Doc, Excellent suggestion. I am not at home now but I'll check this
afternoon.

I did some more testing and found other situations where I could run an
application OK. Right now I think the problem is limited to Explorer. Could
I have a something like a security setting set improperly?

Thanks again guys,

David

David,

If it is in Windows Explorer and you have SP2, verify you don't have your
popup blocker killing it. Thats a common gotcha. Also, you may have some
dynamic content coming down in the form of scripting or Active X. Be careful
about turning these options on and where you surf to.

Thanks Chris.

It's a new hard drive so I really haven't had a chance to do anything. I
have intentionally setup any popup blockers but I suppose it could be the
default somewhere. Still, I thought popup blockers were for browsers only.
Can it affect an application if there is no browser open?

Regarding scripting and Active X - again I haven't had a chance to do
anything, but something could be there anyway. What do I do to find out?

Thanks again,

David

Thanks Chris,

This is a new hard drive so I haven't had a chance to do much. I haven't
intentionally set a popup blocker but there could be one on by default.
Still, I thought popup blockers worked in browsers. Can they also affect
applications if a browser is not even open?

Nor have I done anything with scripting or Active X. Can something be
happening anyway? How do I find out and if so, how do I stop it?

Thanks again,

David
