Because of a serious pc crash, I am having to do a clean install. The pc is
set to boot from the cdrom, and everything is until until the pc has to
reboot. If I "press a key" to boot from cd, the installation restarts from
the beginning, if I let the pc boot from the hard drive I just get a black
screen-help!!!!

So don't press the key to boot from CD.. once the installation has been set
in motion, let the computer strut it's stuff until such time you have to
enter the keycode, your name, password etc..

As, I said in my original message, if I let the pc do its stuff all I get is
a black screen, and it stays like that

It happens because you have started the installation more than once by
pressing any key to boot from CD..

Two options

Do a manual format with a Win 98 boot diskette.. you may have to use FDISK
to remove the non-DOS partition first.. then format FAT32, and reformat NTFS
when given the option by Setup..

Or, you could place your drive into another computer as a slave unit, and
use XP's native format utility to clear your drive of failed setups..

You can boot from cd when the set up win. appears press r for repair then
press c for consol then select the drive and type format c: and if your drive
is not c then put the letter of your h.d. instead of c

Always assuming that it gets that far.. presently, all we know is that at
some point the screen blacks out..
