Clean install of windows xp

I am trying to do a clean install and can only get as far
as press enter to set up. The screen says "The following
list shows existing partitions and unpartitioned space on
this computer,
To set up press enter
to create partition press C
to delete partition press D

and then in a box it says "unknown disk
(There is no disk in this drive)"

I have to switch off and reboot. What do I need to do?

Boot up your PC with a Win98 boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com, then run delpart.exe from
http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm
to delete all existing partitions.
