"Class Installer denies request to install" error

When trying to (re)install a digital camera, which worked 24 hrs prev. but
failed when I tried to connect today. The following error message appeared :-

Digital Camera USB

An error occured during the installation of the device

The Class Installer has denied the request to install or
upgrade this device

No other explanation was given, nor was there an Event Log entry.
I've never come across this error message before and am at a bit of a loss
as to how to proceed.
Any ideas anyone?
regards Gerry

I am also getting the error "The Class Installer has denied the request to
install or upgrade this device" with an HP Scanjet 2100C.

This scanner and its scanning software "Precisionscan" worked for some time.
Then, the "Precisionscan" software stopped responding. After many HP
articles and HP support sessions, stopped using "Precisionscan" and simply
used WindowsXP WIA. Much HP support was required to simply "reinstall" the
Scanner without its associated scanning software, under WinXP SP1.

Now have upgraded to WinXP SP2. The Scanner will not reinstall, but gives
the "Class Installer" error. Am again following all the HP support articles
for full "uninstall" including removing registry keys and additional HP files
that are searched for in the Windows subdirectories, before making each
install attempt. I have the most recent (2002) WinXP driver and software
file from HP. Neither it, nor simply trying to have Windows install for WIA,
works.

Windows update shows the 2100C on a list of scanners with drivers included
in WinXP for WIA use. Do you have to do something more to get that driver?

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Bill
