Removable Media Install - Access Denied error

I had to reinstall Windows XP Home and I am trying to install a Fuji
SmartMedia Card Reader that reads the digital camera memory stick. I
cannot connect the camera directly to the system, because the camera's
connection port is damaged. I had the reader installed before under
XP without problems, but now when I attempt to install the drivers for
the reader, XP goes through the motions of installing the drivers but
finishes with an "Access Denied" error. The reader is connected via a
USB connection which is plugged into a 4-port USB card I added a year
or so ago. It is the same configuration as before the reinstall and
my printer and mouse, which are both plugged into the same USB card,
are working fine. I have tried moving the Reader to different ports
on the USB card and XP finds the Reader as expected, but the "Access
Denied" error still comes up when installing the drivers. I have
downloaded the very latest XP drivers for the Reader. I am guessing
the problem is with Administrative settings, but I know little about
that.

I appreciate any ideas.

Try uninstalling the card reader drivers and running it with just the native
WinXP drivers. Have it unplugged when you uninstall the drivers and be sure
to reboot before plugging it back in.

Thanks for the idea, but I managed to correct it by accident. I will
explain what I did only for the sake of those who may happen across
this posting having the same problem I did.

I uninstalled the device using Device Manager, used XP's Add New
Hardware feature, it went through the same process with the Access
Denied error at the end. For whatever reason I decided to run Add New
Hardware again, answered yes to XP's question about whether I had
installed the device yet or not, I picked the device manually, let XP
search for a driver to use, XP asked me to insert the installation
media (floppy, CD, etc.), I pointed it to the folder containing the
drivers, XP accepted them, and that was it. For some reason a second
install seemed to work. I had no real reason to run Add New Hardware
a second time, but I did and it did the trick.
