Can anyone explain why my sons game Civillisation 4 runs well for about 30 mins then starts to slow the crashes altogether

We'll need the computer specs he's running it on before we could offer any sensible advice.

As a first impression, sounds like it could be overheating. And it wouldn't hurt to make sure the game is patched to latest version.
