Choppy transfer DV-AVI with firewire

I finally figured out that I needed to use firewire instead of the USB I have
been using--I got a firewire cable and card and have plenty of memory. When
I transfer using Windows movie maker in wmv the video looks fairly good.
When I try transfering to avi it looks horrible! I am fairly new to this and
have a sony digital 8 DCR-TRV250 camcorder.

Can you give the full specs of your pc.
Have a read of this for setting up a pc to capture video, a little dated but
most is still good.

Turn off all apps not rewuired, inc internet/antivirus/firewall/screensaver
etc.
Defrag the hdd.
Use a second hdd to capture to if possible or partition the main drive.
Free up as much space as possible, dv-avi is about 13gb per hour, the fuller
the hdd the slower it gets. dv-avi being a much bigger file than wmv takes
much more resources to capture.

I don't know that much about computers, but needless to say I am learning.
My main drive (that Windows movie maker is on) has only 1.35 GB available and
is in desperate need of cleaning. The drive I am transferring to have 64.08
GB free space. I am going to follow your post on simplydv.
I believe I have many variables to eliminate--my firewire that I purchased
does not state that it is of the certified type that some posts
suggested-OHCI compliant -it is Atake and is supposed to flash when
transferring, which it does not do.

Thank you for replying--I am also a medical student, so I do not have all of
the time in the world but after my next exam I will try to clean up my
harddrives and follow your guidelines. I may ask for help again.

Thank you very much
