Choppy distorted sound / 100% CPU usage spikes / memory problem?

My Desktop PC:
WinXP Pro SP2
CPU- P4 2.0 GHz
1 GB RAM
40 GB Hardrive
SoundMAX Integrated Audio Card
ASUS P4PE Motherboard

Several months ago I finally decided to upgrade from Windows 2000 Pro to Win
XP Pro. I didn't format my hardrive, as I understood it wasn't absolutely
necessary (though now I wonder if it's the reason for my problem). After
installing WinXP I fully updated the operating system (which I had some
problems with, but as of now I believe I am fully updated).

Now, sounds are sometimes choppy and distorted. Mostly this occurs during
CPU usage spikes which peak at 100% at times. Sometimes the computer becomes
very sluggish during these spikes, sometimes it's not so bad.

Since this has happened I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for my
SoundMAX Integrated audio card which came intregrated in my ASUS P4PE
motherboard. It seems the the audio card up to date with the correct and
current driver. No help.

I've replaced my entire speaker system. Didnt' help.

At first I suspected this was mainly a problem with the sound card/ some
audio issue with the computer but now I am more suspicious that it is a
memory problem? But I have 1 GB of RAM and it wasn't like this before I
installed XP!

After browsing these forums I've tried to follow some of the advice given
for similar memory/ cpu usage issues:

1) I checked Event Viewer-
a) The NTPort Library Driver service failed to start due to the following
error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
b) The NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol service failed
to start due to the following error:
The parameter is incorrect.

These two errors seem to occur consistantly so I followed the
troubleshooter's advice to uninstall these devices with the device manager
(and reinstall them). But when using Add new Hardware to re-install them,
they didn't appear (not plug in play?). So basically I don't know if I
screwed anything up but it hasn't helped or worsened the situation.

2) I used sigverif.exe to check for unsigned drivers. There were around 50
unsigned? I don't know what to do about this, or if this is normal or
horrible or what.

3) I've downloaded Process Explorer- But I'm not sure if I know how to
affectively use it to analyze this problem. It clearly shows the CPU usage
spikes, but I could see that using the Task Manager.

I've written a lot - so I'll stop here to see what advice you all have. If
you have any questions for me or need any other info to help me troubleshoot
please ask, I'll be checking this post frequently and will continue to
troubleshoot on my own.

Thank you,
Cyrus
