Choose details question

Is there a way to permanently change the 'choose details' setting in the
folder options (i.e. to order files by date created, file name, etc)? I can
change it once but it always defaults to a different setting. Can I change it
permanently?

There is a checkbox for Remember each folders settings.

I found that box ("Remember each folder's view settings") but it was already
checked so I'm wondering if that is to remember whether a folder is viewed by
icon, list, details, etc... I'm trying to find out how they're organized, not
how they're viewed...

IIRC, You can also lock the sort setting by holding the CTRL key down
while closing the Window with the "X" in the upper right.
