CHKDSK - Volume Dirty, Can't Recover System

Upon Startup...XP goes into CHKDSK of which the reason is Volume Dirty and
hangs at 60% complete (Stage 1 of 3). It just doesn't seem to be doing
anything at this point as it appears hung, dead in the water. What has me
concerned is, there is no option available for me to go another route to
recover my system, even with the XP CD. It goes straight to CHKDSK as
mentioned earlier and hangs. What has happened? Have I lost my hard drive?
I'm frustrated with it as my system is fairly young and haven't experienced
anything like this before. Thank you.

Could be bad hardware. Age has little to do with hardware failure beyond
the chance increasing over time. However - I would bet that chance is
higher than you like for any individual component at any random time. ;-)

Grab the hard disk drive manufacturer's diagnostics utility and use it to
test the drive for issues.

How do I grab the hard disk drive manufacturer's diagnostics utility?

Go to the hard disk drive manufacturer's web page and their downloads
section and look for their diagnostics/testing utility and download
it/follow directions on their web page.
