Chkdsk running since yesterday on F: drive, folder contents disappeared, stuck???

Still running chkdsk... now it seems to be stuck at "File verification
completed."

Friday night I was updating a web page using FP 2003. It kept locking
up, just hanging, so I finally closed the progam, shut down the
computer for the night, figured I'd lost the pge I was working on but
shrugged it off.

Sat. morning not only was the page not there, but the folder it was in
was also completely empty. The folder has all my websites in it, and
is on my F: drive (A Maxtor one-touch HD, 80GB, about 3 years old).
The other folders on the F: drive are fine.

Shut the Maxtor off & on, no luck. So figured I'd do the chkdsk stuff
again - had a similar problem last October - which fixed things.

I don't remember exactly what I did - I've also had company all
weekend and have just popped in to check the computer periodically,
haven't had my mind on it - but the first round of checking took over
18 hours. I guess it goes in stages? It seemed to finish stage 1 and
then hung up for a couple of hours - some message about an
"unspecified error" in file record 36998 or something - finally went
to bed, left it running, and it finished overnight and got back to the
prompt.

I figured I'd do the chkdsk again to look for more errors. It's been
running about 10 hours, and about 1 1/2 hours ago I got the "File
verification completed" line. Now what? Is it supposed to do something
else? I think I'd told it - but I'm not 100% certainly - /r.

What do I do now???

I think that HD may be beyond help, but want to salvage what I can. It
won't all fit on my C: drive.

You might want to post your question on the "24 hour help desk" newsgroup.
You also might want to try the "scandisk" program under systems tools. It
does sound like your HD is die-ing. You should be doing a weekly or monthly
backup to some kind of offline storage (cd-rom(r) or external HD that is not
constantly running).

Get more storage and import/publish all online/on webserver websites to that
storage. That won't help you retrieve your older versions and
work-in-progress but it will give you another copy of your current
production code.
