I have a laptop running XP home and every time I boot it, it runs
chkdsk which is taking a couple of hours. It reports segments are
unreadable. Is there anyway to stop this happening? If I hit
escape prior to the chkdsk it just seems to freeze.
Yes..
Replace the bad hardware. Your hard drive has obvious (and
reported to you) issues.
Shenan, thanks for the reply, this only started after installing
some camera software, which I have uninstalled. The laptop is only
six months old and still under guarantee, do you think its
definately a hard disk problem or is it worth running some disk
doctor software?
CHKDSK checks the surface of your hard disk drive for errors. If it is
reporting issues - you probably have issues. The coincidence of it
happening after you installed software may not actually be coincidence - but
the fact you used parts of the hard disk drive you never used before.
You may want to contact your laptop manufacturer (look on their web page)
and see if they have utilities available for you to test the hard drive
with.. At least get them to tell you the probable name-brand of the hard
disk drive in the laptop so you could go to the actual manufacturer's web
page (for the drive) and download/utilize their tester.
But before you do ANY of that - backup your stuff... Things may be on the
edge of going wrong here - and since you have a warning better take
advantage of it. *grin*
