chkdsk error free space and volume bitmap

i usually perform chkdsk from the command prompt (only
rarely do i do it from the recovery console), but sometimes
i'll get a chkdsk error. it'll say something about windows
finding free space that's allocated in the volume bitmap,
and that i should run chkdsk /f to fix it.

but when i run chkdsk again, the error isn't there.

i've read that it has something to do with ntfs and
security descriptors. can i get a definitive answer?

some more info. i built this computer myself about 6 months ago.

abit nf7-s v2.0
amd athlon xp 2000+ (not oc)
micron 512mb ddr pc2100
seagate 7200rpm 120gb hard drive (i think it's 7200.7)
maxtor 40gb hard drive
g4 ti4200 64mb ddr
other components

the seagate (primary) is relatively new, and it passes all diagnostic tests.
i'm guessing windows is having problems with corruption in ntfs.
