chkdsk c: /f issue

I am running win xp home edition and know "there is a problem with the file
system" and run the above and receive the message about locking the volume?
i have tried to run this at the 'command' prompt and receive same locking
message.

also, i try to run disk defrag (my computer-properties-tool) it gives me the
msg: disk defrag has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume c,
plz run chkdsk /f, but i cannot because it is locked???

any solution?

If the file system is in question,install xp cd,exit the info page,go to
run,type:
cmd In cmd type:Sfc /Scannow When its thru,type:EXIT Or type:Defrag C:
if thats what you wanted also.

When you do a disk check, with fix option, for system drive, it cannot be
locked for the check disk application to give it exclusive access to disk.
You'll need to reboot your computer when you run chkdsk /f, so it will start
checking disk, before Windows desktop loads.

Same for "disk defrag has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume
c". Reboot and let it run. :)

The disk is "locked" because the operating system is using it.
That's why chkdsk can't run. You have to do a Restart to let the
chkdsk /f run; that way it starts chkdsk working before the disk
is "locked" by the os. A little simplisitic, but that's close.
It's only drive C (the boot drive) that you have to Restart like
this. Other drives won't give that problem.
If you notice chkdsk doing fixes, don't panic: the only ones
to worry about are the ones it can't fix, and it'll give you
instructions if that happens.

Once you reboot and chkdsk has run, then you should be able to
run defrag also since there won't be a chkdsk waiting to run. Do
another Restart before you run the defrag.

Defrag will not run until the scheduled chkdsk has run.

If you are getting one of these messages:

Cannot lock volume for direct access
or
Cannot open volume for direct access

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0 can cause the problem.

A program called Hitman Pro can cause the problem.

A really old version of ZoneAlarm (a version from 2004) can cause the
problem.

BitDefender Internet Security 9 can cause the problem.

Spyware Doctor can also cause the problem.

The /x switch doesn't work if Spyware Doctor is installed. Spyware Doctor
needs to be uninstalled or you can do this...

To run chkdsk from a command prompt.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt, type:

chkdsk C: /x

Hit your Enter key.

The following error message appears:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y, hit Enter and close the command prompt.

Reboot.

The /x switch: Use with NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first, if
necessary. All open handles to the drive are invalidated. /x also includes
the functionality of /f. The /F switch fixes errors on the disk.

pop,

i did try your suggestion and I still cannot run disk defrag as the same msg
pops up "disk defrag has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on volume
c" i have restarted and it runs everytime I restart?...i have also found out
that I have a "dirty" volume? It has been 2 yrs since i did a new install,
is my times up??

See if CHKDSK will run as follows: My computer>Rt. click
drive>Properties>Tools tab>Error checking- DO NOT check "Auto fix..." or
"Scan for..." CHKDSK should then run then and not at reboot. Note that it
will not indicate errors but will verify that it can run.
 
Thank you, but I still cannot run disk defrag. chkdsk does not run at
startup now, but i am still getting the message when i try defragging:
volume is in use, etc. do you want to run chkdsk at next startup? it is
almost like a glitch with Microsoft. I have been on so many forums, searched
the web for an answer but to no avail.

do i need to do a clean install? thanks for the help :-)
