Defrag problem

PB

When attempting to defrag, "disk deframenter has detected that chkdsk is
scheduled to run on volume: (C:). Please run chkdst/f. I reboot and the same
message returns. I run chkdsk as above and get "chkdsk can not run because
the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule volume to
be checked the next time the system restarts?" I try yes and no, and still
the same thing again. Any Ideas? Thanks PB

Have you been using any third party disk utilities as an alternative to
chkdsk / Disk Defragmenter?

Hope this helps.

Sounds similar to a problem that was driving me nuts.

I tried doing a boot time defrag with several tools and they all
failed when starting to defrag the boot volume.

It turned out that ZoneAlarm Free (version 7.0.462.000) had installed
a Kaspersky anti-rootkit scanner, klif.sys, that was pre-empting
access to the drive. Look for klif.sys and files named fidbox.dat,
fidbox.idx in your windows\system32\drivers folder.

If that is the issue, disable klif.sys then remove it. It has no
function in ZoneAlarm Free anyway.

No third party disk utilities installed. Just the basic MS XP media edition
defrag from the start/programs/acc/system tools menu

No, klif or fidbox files?

with any windows setup/
installation disk boot
the computer with it.

then the setup process will
provide the option to
install windows and the
option for the recovery
console.

with the recovery console
you will be able to log
into your disk system and
a disk prompt will be provided
where you can directly run
commands like the chkdsk.
