Hi All

I support a number of primary schools who now have IT suites of some 19 or
20 PCs and the poor teachers are having real trouble in protecting these
machines from the childern's inquisitive mitts!!

What they are looking for is some kind of software (preferably free!!) that
will allow them to protect the OS of the machines as much as possible so
that the kids can only get to the apps that they want them to use.

I have seen one piece of software that allowed the teacher to lock these
machines from their master PC (all of them are in the same workgroup) simply
by clicking on the relevant ones, but I didn't manage to find what this
software was called.

I know I could create a new user account for the pupils, but they still seem
to be able to get into a number of things that they shouldn't.

Is there any good software out there?

Thanks

Plenty of different packages out there that do this. I'll point you at net
op (http://www.netop.com/netop-1.htm) because that is what springs to mind,
but there are many different alternatives out there that you could be
talking about here.

Try this:

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

ABSOLUTELY! Search MIcrosoft.com for the "Windows XP SHared Computer
Toolkit".... follow it's instructions and install it, and love it. It's a
great (FREE) tool!

Yep... love this tool... One quick note....

The tool won't work for computers on a domain. You said they are all
in one workgroup so that should be fine.... just remember if they are
ever moved to a domain that the settings will no longer apply....

Cheers.....
