check in a checkbox

I am trying to put a checkbox into a word document (w2000) and cannot simply
enter a checkbox that my users just click and a check appears in the box. I
want to have a box they check, not another dialogue box that they select
check.
Please help!

If you're using the check box form field, you must protect the form to
enable the check boxes.
