Check Disc freezes-can't get past it

My computer suddenly wanted to do a check disc on boot. I let it and once it
was done, it froze on that screen. But, in the background I could hear the
Windows opening 'song'. I tried opening in Safe Mode and it does the same
thing. It wants the check disc run first. If I click on a key to bypass it,
the computer freezes up anyway.

How do I get past this to delete whatever conflict there is?

Install xp cd,boot to cd,recovery, select 1 for C: Press enter key for
password,
type:CHKDSK C: /R When its thru,type:EXIT Let xp start,remove xp cd.

Does it matter that my xp cd is an update to Win? I'll try this though.
However, when I was booting the system and before the check disc msg, I hit
F8 and tried a recovery to the last good boot and it does the same hangup on
check disc. I need a recovery option to go back about a week for a good
boot. Will your way give me the option to choose a date?
