I've never heard of a sand chart, but a search at google turns up this list: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-25,GGLD:en&biw=1123&q="sand+chart" Based on the first link there, it looks pretty much like an area chart to me.
