chart data labels -- display some but not all

Is there a way to display some, but not all, of the data labels in a line
chart? I have several data points along several lines and only need to
display certain time periods. Is there a way to do this without deleting the
ones I don't want? That way would be very time consuming. I'm using
Powerpoint 2003. Thanks!

The only way I know is to delete the ones I don't want.

This is a good question, one I've never really thought about. Hopefully one
of the Excel MVPs who check in here occasionally will let us know a better
way.

If it's an MSGraph chart, go into its data table and doubleclick any of the
gray "chiclet-thingies" at the top of each column or left of each row to toggle
the data off/on for plotting purposes.

Thanks, but it's the data labels I need to partially display, not the data
points themselves.

Shoot, I posted earlier, but it's not shown up yet.

Anyway, I just said that I never really thought about it before, but it
would be nice if there is another way to do this. I'm not aware of any,
though -- I just delete the ones I don't need.

I'm hoping one of the Excel MVPs who checks in here occasionally will have a
better answer for us!

I actually figured it out -- turn the data labels off for the entire line of
data, but then double click on the actual data point where you do want the
label, then click the Value button for displaying the data label. Only that
one will be displayed.

Thanks for everyone's responses!

Hi,

One way is to add an additional series to which you apply data labels. But
only enter values for the points that you want displayed.
Format the line/markers to none for this "labels only" series. Also remove
it from the legend if shown.

The only drawback with this approach is that when using MSGraph you will
need to double entry any values as you can not link cells on the Data sheet
as you could do with Excel.

Cheers
Andy
