Character set problem

I have a P4 Windows XP system (English, UK) with SP2.

Problem: In most - but not all - programs when I try to insert an
accented letter 'e' (e-acute), an inverted N with an accent mark on
top is displayed instead.

I use a US keyboard, and the regional settings/language is set to
English U.S.

In IE, encoding is set to auto-select.

I have tried different encoding settings, but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

All fonts? Some font sets do not have all the characters. What programs are
troublesome?
