I am trying to get my Chapter numbers to show up in my footers, and I don't
know the correct field to use, or how to format the syntax. Can someone help
me? I just want the chapter number to be automatically picked up by the
corresponding footer.

You can use the "Include chapter number" in the Page Number format dialog box.
Also you may wish to check out the uses of StyleRef fields.
Hope this helps.

I don't want to include the chapter #'s in the page numbers; I have a footer
that says "Chapter #: Chapter Title". I'm getting the chapter title from the
Heading, but I can't figure out how to put a field that will display the
chapter 1 as it is typed in the heading.

In your first question you did not mention the Chapter text only numbers. Try
using the StyleRef field linked to your chapter heading style. I use this all
the time and it work well.
Go to Insert, Field, StyleRef select your Chapter style and then select the
Codes. You will need one field for the Chapter number and one for the Text.

You should end up with something like:
Chapter {STYLEREF "Heading 1" \n }: {STYLEREF "Heading 1" }

Hope this helps
