Chapter / Page numbers

I have my Chapters set up as Heading 1 style (with Chapters numbered A, B, C,
etc), and I have my page numbers set up to show the chapter number and page
number. Thus I end up with pages A-1, B-1, etc.

My client however does not want to have Chapter I or Chapter O, so I need to
"skip" these letters in my Chapter numbering. This is fine for the actual
chapter title as I use "Format Bullets and Numbering" and re-start the
numbering at the next letter. However, my page numbering does not pick up
this change and continues with the previous chapter number - thus Chapter J
ends up with page numbers H-1, H-2 etc.
Can you tell me if it's possible to achieve what I need?

Hi Chris

The easiest solution to this, although not necessarily the most elegant, is
to create a Heading 1 style for Chapter I and Chapter O, and format them as
hidden text.

The advantage to doing this is that it is very obvious to someone using the
document (or editing it in 6 months' time) why the numbering skips.

You can choose whether to view the hidden text at Tools > Options > View and
you can choose whether to print the hidden text at Tools > Options > Print.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Shauna. I've actually tried this but I've set up the heading with it's
own custom text in Format/Style/Modify/Format/Numbering/Customize so that it
reads "Part X: " and I don't know how to "hide" this part of the chapter
heading. (I hope you knkw what I mean.)

Any other ideas?? Or should I just try to convince my client to have Part I
and Part O?

Actually Shauna, I just tried your suggestion again and it worked!! I don't
know what I was doing wrong before!! But many thanks for your help. (PS.
Great web site - I've added it to my Favorites.)
