Chapter Heading Formatting

Hi,
I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask - if not kindly let
me know and I would go there :(

I have a report due (sort of a Thesis) that would have a number of
chapters. I have seen other reports, and they have fancy formatting
and graphics for the page that starts the chapter. Even text books and
computer software related books have some kind of graphics to the page
introducing a new chapter.

I would like to know if it is possible to obtain some of these
templates from the internet (just as we can obtain website templates
off the net). I would like to know what term to Google for when I
search for this stuff i.e. what are these things called.

I tried Googling for "MS Word Templates" - but this is not what I am
looking for. (These are a collection of fonts etc - which is not my
purpose.)

Thanks to any one who has ideas.
O.O.

You'll save a lot of time if you just create your own. For inspiration, look
at a number of books on the same subject as your thesis (or at least in a
similar area), decide on a layout you like, and then figure out how to
replicate it. For general help, see http://daiya.mvps.org/bookword.htm

Thanks Suzanne. I think that in the worst case where no one else has
any ideas on how to get these, I would have to do what you say i.e.
create my own. People put out icons, skins web templates etc. so I was
hoping that someone would do something similar for MS Word.
At least you have clarified that I was not searching for the wrong
terms.
Thanks anyway,
O.O.

You can search the Office Template Gallery at
http://office.microsoft.com/templates/default.aspx? to see if there is
anything useful in the way of graphics. Be wary of the templates themselves,
though. Many of them are created by artists/designers who are more
comfortable with page layout applications and do not use Word properly at
all.

Dear Suzanne,

Thank you for the update. I went there and found that a lot of the
material is not even related to Word - and when it is, it is artistic
as you said i.e. "Guest Albums" "Invitations" etc. I don't think I
could get what I was looking for though.

Thanks for the Tip though. At least this Exercise and the links you
sent - introduced me to the concept of templates in Word that I did
not know about. I have some questions in this regard - but I would
post them in new threads as they are not related to the topic of this
thread.

O.O.

You could try looking for "reports," which will be the closest thing to
"book" layout. Wrt templates, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart1.htm and
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CreateATemplatePart2.htm. The latter
has a lot of information about formatting technical manuals that is also
applicable to books.
