changing icons on desktop and settings

Some of my idesktop cons change position after restarting. It's a new
computer, running XP plus norton. Icons which have moved around include
acrobat, windows media player, recycle bin etc. Also, XP doesn't remember
settings, notably that I want to download updates but choose to install. It
constantly reverts to automatic updates at 3 am. And I can't customise my
toolbar e.g. changing something to 'always show' makes not a jot of
difference.

I have a Dell Optiplex, 24 hours old. This running a weird version of XP,
very unlike the ones I've used elsewhere. Dell have 30 days software support
but sofar, haven't been able to help.

It's very worrying.

Right click the desktop and choose Arrange Icons By.
Uncheck Auto Arrange.

Partial solution for problem # 2...
...running XP plus norton.

Note: I have automatic update enabled... But if brave enough, go to Control
Panel. Should have in list "Symantec Live Update" in list of items. IT
has access to Live Update program. Open it, select "Automatic Live Update"
tab. Then uncheck, "Use automatic Live Update". Just remember that you
have to do it from now on. My solution or reminder: I put a shortcut to
Live Update on the Desktop next to my OE email shortcut. Path to create it
is Program Files > Symantec > Live Update > LUALL.exe .

My solution would be to uninstasll Norton and get something decent like
NOD32 or Avast.
