changing file type icons

Normally to change file type icons I go to Folder Options>File Types,
select the file type and click Advanced.

The Advanced option is not available for file types where the default
program to open that file type has been changed.

So how do I change the icon in this case?

From your post, my understanding of this issue is: You would like to change
some file type's icon. If this is not correct, please feel free to let me
know.

Based on my experience, the File Type's icon is decided by the program
which is used to open this type of files. If the Advanced button is greyed
out, I think the program may be unavailable. So I think you may reinstall
the program and then test this issue again.

If the issue persists, please let me know what the problematic file type is.

Hi Tom thanks for your reply.

The Advanced button is not greyed out, instead its replaced by a button
that reads Restore which when clicked restores to the previous settings
for that particular file type.

Problem is in this case there is no option to change the icon as is with
the Advanced button.

It's really no big deal but it would be nice to be able to change file
type icons whenever I feel like it or want a fresh look

Thanks for your update.

I understand the situation now, but I think there is no way to do this
without Advanced button before you Restore it to default setting.

If you would like to change the file icon with another program, you may
install this program again, or re-register needed file types via the
program if there is this function provided.

Thanks for that Tom.

Actually I do have a related issue that I didn't mention before.

I tried your advice and reinstalled the program (Firefox) but still the
icons are unchanged (htm, html). They don't even have the IE icon, just
the plain old white icon - the type you get in Windows when there is no
related program.

Re-registering the file type under Folder Options>File Types with either
IE or Firefox doesn't change the icon even after computer restart.

Interesting thing I just noticed. In IE under Internet Options>Programs
there is nothing listed under HTML Editor even though I have Firefox set
as the default program for HTM/HTML files.

I think there is an error in the registry causing all my troubles.

Hi Marty!
The same thing happened to me.
I solved it by:
1. Removing firefox completely
2. Deleting the .HTML and .HTM file types from regedit.
3. Restarting and then reinstalling firefox

try this out, it worked for me
