Changed Registry Permissions

In an effort to get the Windows Desktop Search to install to use with a Beta
of Office 7, I attempted to change all the registry permissions, and now the
system hangs of the blue screen with the XP logo.

My boneheaded move which resulted in turning my laptop into a paperweight
was this: I went into regedit, right clicked HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, and attempted
to change the permissions from Administrator to my user ID. It made some
changes, then errored out. When I rebooted, it put me where I am now.

I've tried using the "Last known good configuration" option, but no luck. I
figured I'd ask if there was a way to fix this before I did a format and
reload.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Have you tried a System Restore via Safe Mode?

Hi

If none of those options give you access to Windows you will need to try a
'Repair' install of XP.

Next time use ERUNT to backup the registry. It can be invoked from the
recovery console and a backup of the registry restored.
