Sofware Install registry Permission Error

M

Marc Seidler

I have a client with a Dell Laptop with XP Home who is having trouble
installing misc software. I can install most software but when installing
Xp Sp2 or Spybot S&D for example I get a registry permission error message
regarding HKey_Classes_Root in misc keys and the install fails. I tried
running "secedit /configure /cfg %windir% \repair\secsetup.inf /db
secsetup.sdb /verbose" to no avail. I attempted to change the permissions
in the reg manually to no avail. Any Ideas?

My friend's pc did the exact same thing...she did a repair and now cannot
get any critical updates; not even from Microsoft's download page. She is
working with Microsoft now--meaning she has a case open now with them to see
what the problem is. But her's did the same thing; it got to a registry file
and it gave her an error. She went into the permissions in registry too
prior to speaking with Microsoft support and it didn't work for her either.
Tech support took her through many steps today to try to fix the issue but
no luck so far, they said they would call her back tommorrow. I'll let you
know if she tells me any info towards this error. Serenity

Hi Marc,

Does this user have admin privileges? What is the exact/verbatim error
message? And which process did you try when you stated: I attempted to
change the permissions in the reg manually to no avail.

This one?:

1 - In the Management Console\Services STOP WMI and set to manual.
2 - Go to the WMI repository %Windows%system32%wbem and delete the
repository [best back it up first by calling "winmgmt/backup].
3 -Set the WMI service back to Automatic
4 - From %Windows%system32%wbem run "wbemtest" and connect to your
namespace.
5 - Run regedt32.exe. Locate current HKEY_Current_Config. Go down the tree
to System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class. The open the class key and right
click on the sub key 0000 and select permissions and make sure that the
permissions for you [administrator] are "Full".

Note: It is not commonly needed to reset Security to default for this issue
using:
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb
/verbose

That said, did you also use the /overwrite switch?
