Changed Icons!

I recently made a clean installation of Windows XP Home Edition on a new
laptop only to discover after a while that the desktop icons (recycle, my
computer etc) have taken on the appearance of Windows ME icons. Don't know
how this happened - does anyone know how I can restore them to XP icons?

You can change those icons via control panel \ display \ desktop

Already tried that - makes no difference.

By any chance is the laptop Display set to a low-color (16 color or
256 colors) mode?
