Change the CN of all users

Matthew Kitchin

I'm in a 2000 Native Mode AD and Exchange 2000 Native Mode environment. I
used to use Firstname Lastname for all of our users. We have now been bought
by another company, and had to switch everything to Lastname, Firstname. I
found the script from Microsoft to change the Display Name of all our users.
It worked well. It switched the Display name to Lastname, Firstname like I
wanted.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;277717

I found this article that let me change the default display name and CN
(Common Name) of newly created accounts
http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=277717

Now I need to know how to change the CN (Common Name) for all my existing
users. It is still set to firstname Lastname. Is there any way to globally
change all CN's to reflect what is currently set as the Display name?

Thanks,
Matthew

Matthew,

Take a look at one of my favorite AD tools: ADModify.

You are on the right track. Using ADSIEdit will make it so that all of the
user account objects that you create from this point forward will have the
Last Name, First Name setting. However, you still need to change your
existing user account objects. This is where ADModify comes in.

You can download this from the MS ftp site at the following location:

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/PSS/Tools/Exchange%20Support%20Tools/ADModify/

NOTE: there is a more recent version of this tool that fixes a known bug
with the Office field. If you want the newer version please send me an
e-mail and I will gladly send it to you. It is too big ( 860kb ) to be
included in this NG.
