change greek text back to english? so far i only get boxes

I coded a confidential document into greek font using the symbol facility but
when trying to revert to English for easy reading, I find that the text will
not open in english but appears as empty unreadable boxes. I have tried
using the 'symbol' facility, also checking that my language installation has
greek. This may be the problem as I cannot find evidence of the
installation. However, if 'Symbol' made the change for me in the first
place, why will it not change it back?
