CF formating and booting problems

I formatted the Sandisk CF (connected to a USB port) from my development
machine(XPpro SP2) and copied the built image on it, but it does not boot at
all. I tried different variations such as FAT and FAT32 with the conversion
to NTFS ...to no use. I read quite a few postings on this forum but none of
them help to the point of solving my problem........HELLLLP.

You should prepare the CF on the target machine using MS-DOS - Fdisk,
format, and then use Bootprep to change the boot sector. then you can copy
the XPe imae to the CF.

Sean,

Based on your suggestion, I format the CF(with /s) and bootprep it(/d x)
then copy the image on it...but I get this error message "load needed DLLs
for kernel. Please contact your support person to report this problem."

Can you shed some light on this for me please?

thanks

Preparing CF cards is a very old problem that has been discussed in the news
group. Formating a CF card in XP pro will not lay down the boot sector,
since XP thinks the CF is a removable drive.

Here is a recent post:
http://forums.microsoft.com/EmbeddedWindows/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1346955&SiteID=47

1. On your target system, you should have an IDE to CF adapter to place the
CF card.
2. Boot the system to DOS
3. Run FDISK to clear
4. Run Format no /s required
5. run Bootprep to change the boot

If you have done this, when does this error appear during the boot? Does
Windows logo appear on boot? Does the system blue screen? Are there any
other hard drives in the system?

How bout:
....Windows Embedded\utilities\ufdprep.exe /ntfs drive

Thats what I do, works every time. No fiddling around with fdisk,
format or dos required.

Lantz,

Just to be sure, have you try Ufdprep on CF (Compact Flash) or is it just
USB thumb drive?
