certain programs install, open okay, but will not after reboot

Hi,

I've had a problem with installing a few programs in XP Professional. They
install okay and I can open and use them fine. But after I have shut down
the computer and restarted, they no longer can be opened.
A few of the prominent ones have been quicktime player and yahoo messenger.
No matter if it's even the newest version it won't stay working. One method
I found to temporarily resolve this problem was to install the program and
make a removable disk copy of the .exe. Then (when I restarted the computer)
I replaced the rebooted one with the original and it worked fine again. I
also noticed the original was smaller in size which leads me to believe XPp
is mangling the program somehow. Does anyone know why this happens and/or
how to stop it?

This is the generic message I am seeing:

"Yahoo! Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."
