cdrw drive

i bought this cdrw drive awhile ago

i've been reading cds for a few months with no problems. however,
today, i decided to try to burn one. it didn't work. whenever i put
in a blank cdrw disc, it messes the drive up till i reboot. the drive
basically tells me there's no disc in there.

do cdrw drives normally require special drivers? anyone know what
might be going on?

Hmmm... the CDRW discs I got don't seem to work at the library either.
Any ideas?

They are Sony CD-RWs that say they're optimized for 1x, 2x, and 4x. I
guess today's drives are faster than that, but shouldn't these still
work?

I got some branded CDRWs and they were flippin useless - burnt once and
never worked properly again. Cost me £10 and I can pay that on a 100 disc
spindle of CDRs so I dont bother with CDRWs any more. My CDRewriter has
burnt 100s of CDRs with no problem and only 2 duds.

That might do it. The 1x-4x CD-RW discs are constructed a bit
different from the 4x-10x+ discs. Some of the newer burners (mine
included) refuse to burn the old style 1x-4x discs. Had that problem
when I upgraded from my creaky old 16x CD burner to my current drive.
In my case, my current drives (an NEC 3500A and BenQ 1620A) will read
them and even erase them, but will crap out if I try to write anything
to them. I was kind of annoyed when I found this out, as I figured
the 4x-10x rating for CD-RW burning should have meant that I can burn
1x-4x discs at 4x. Apparently that isn't the case.

Buy some of the CD-RW discs that are rated for higher speeds and see
if that works any better.

What software are you using to write to the CDRW ?.

The drive might not recognize the disc properly and could be burning at too high a speed. Configure your software to burn at 4X.

Your problem could be either hardware or software. Try burning a CDR. Try different software. If you run Windows XP you can use the built-in software; right click on a file and send it to the CD writer. You might have a driver conflict between the windows driver and the driver that Cheetah Burner installed.
